Practices & Tools for Everyday Life

Contemplative practice doesn’t have to be complicated. A few simple tools, used consistently, can make a meaningful difference. This page is designed to give you a place to start—or to support a practice you already have.

Start Where You Are

You don’t need special training or a perfect routine. Most people begin with something simple: a few minutes of quiet, a short breathing exercise, or a moment of reflection during the day. The goal is not to do it perfectly, but to begin noticing.

Ways to Practice

There are many forms of contemplative practice. You may find that one or two feel more natural than others. Some common approaches include:

  • Meditation: sitting quietly and focusing attention, often on the breath

  • Introspective journaling: writing to explore thoughts, emotions, and patterns

  • Mindful awareness: pausing during the day to notice what’s happening internally and externally

  • Time in nature: stepping outside and paying attention to your surroundings

  • Simple reflection: taking a few minutes to reset before or after a meaningful moment

These practices are flexible. You can adapt them to fit your schedule and your environment.

For Educators and Organizations

If you work with students, teams, or communities, these practices can be adapted for group settings. Simple approaches might include:

  • Beginning a class or meeting with a brief moment of quiet

  • Offering a short guided breathing exercise

  • Creating space for reflection before or after a challenging activity

  • Modeling calm, attentive presence

These small practices can help build attention, emotional awareness, and steadiness over time.

Building a Consistent Practice

  • Start small and keep it manageable

  • Tie practice to something you already do (morning, transitions, end of day)

  • Don’t worry about doing it “right” or "being successful"

  • Pay attention to what you notice over time
